‘engaging an
entire sector’
Magazine design – Horticulture New Zealand
About
Horticulture New Zealand’s flagship magazines play a vital role in communicating to fruit and vegetable growers across New Zealand.
Our brief was to refresh the design of the sister magazines to make them more contemporary and engaging, helping raise the profile of the work HortNZ does to support the sector, and the profile of the sector itself.
The magazines tell the many and varied stories of all the great things happening in the horticulture sector – and the people who are doing them. They also highlight the challenges growers face and provide technical information to help them in their work, making them packed full of useful information.
Approach
Successful magazine design is underpinned by a design toolkit that allows for attractive design and strong communication within a framework of cohesiveness and efficiency. We created a robust design system that is not only appealing to look at and engaging to read, but makes it easy to produce a lengthy document in a short amount of time. We also wanted the magazines to be like sisters – different personalities, but still part of the same family.
We’ve streamlined the process by having working meetings with the client at an early stage to resolve any issues early, and minimise changes, stress levels and the chance of errors at the 11th hour!
Outcomes
Thanks to our streamlined layout and design process, we have been able to easily adapt to changes in the magazine’s requirements, such as the merging of the magazines into a united publication for the industry.
We focus on ensuring that content is informative and easy to digest, with thoughtfully designed layouts celebrating the many aspects of horticulture. The design has also proven popular with advertisers.
Despite a digital version being available, the hard copy format remains popular. It seems the beauty of a physical publication to browse at your leisure endures with this audience!
