Annual Report – GNS Science

About
Our brief was to do something a little different with the GNS Science annual report than in recent years. While the report would still cover the year’s successes, key stories and financial and non-financial reporting, there was a desire to shift the focus to stakeholders – and the benefits GNS Science’s work delivers to Aotearoa New Zealand and New Zealanders.

Starting with the theme “Science that matters, where it matters most”, Scenario was asked to create a document that tells the GNS Science story in a cohesive, visually interesting way, demonstrating impact beyond the words of the report and representing the depth and breadth of the value that GNS Science delivers.

Approach
Picking up on the theme, we developed a story that takes the audience on a journey across Aotearoa New Zealand to showcase the range of work that GNS Science does, and hone in literally on ‘where it matters most’ by visiting some of the locations where the science is having a real impact.

We wanted to capture the interest of readers to encourage them to explore further – this was achieved by working with an illustrator to create a unique set of quirky illustrations that are engaging and intriguing. They also provide a nice contrast to the more technical images and information, creating a well-paced journey through the document.

Outcomes
The report was designed to be shared in a roadshow across the motu, enabling readers from different parts of the country to relate to the report and GNS Science’s work by seeing the direct benefits to their regions and communities.

The illustrations further enhanced the storytelling by providing an engaging way to communicate complex science subjects to audiences.

The all-important financial and non-financial reporting wasn’t forgotten. The front half of the report was designed as the flagship document that focused on creating awareness and celebrating the work done over the year. A separate document was created for the financials and other reporting information.
